Standardization in Mexico
By introducing Mexico in the field of the global trade, it was necessary that our country modify its laws. This fact gave rise to the current Federal Law on Metrology and Standardization (LFMN, as in Spanish).

To assess the conformity of products, procedures, services, etc., to be commercialized in the country, the Federal Law on Metrology and Standardization, and its regulations, has established conditions and procedures to make the national regulation.

What is Standardization?
Standardization is the process of formulating and applying rules in order to establish a specific activity for the benefit and cooperation of all those interested and, specifically, for getting a best global economy keeping in mind the functionality and safety.

The Standardization objective is to improve the quality and competitiveness of products and services, and provide industry with a better position in foreign market.

What is a Standard?
A document established by consensus and approved by a recognized body that provides for common and repeated use, rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context.

What is the object of Standardization in Mexico?
 The Mexican Standardization System should be supported by industry and government to ensure the national products are manufactured under proper conditions so that they meet the requirements demanded by the globalized.

Technical Committees of National Standardization
NYCE conducts its standardization work through well-balanced and integrated Committees, representing producers, distributors, traders, service providers, consumers, higher and scientific education institutions, as well as sectors of general interest including any society sector. Technical Standardization Committees should have: national coverage; ability to participate in international standardization activities; and adopt the code of Good Practices for elaboration, adoption and application of the Standard issued by the WTO.

NYCE develops in three Technical Committees of National Standardization in sectors such as Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies, from which 30 subcommittees are derived.

What is the importance of the Standardization?

  1. Standards facilitate the free commerce.
  2. Compliance with the standards allows formal and competitive industries the permanence of their products on the market.
  3. Compliance with the standards reinstates products to be part of global solutions (equipment technologically compatible is easily marketed).
  4. International standards allow emerging economies to have knowledge and updated industrial procedures.
  5. Standards are a development instrument for all countries and their industries.

Mexican Standards NMX

  1. Provide a reference for defining the quality, functionality and performance of products and services.
  2. They are issued by accredited National Bodies of Standardization or by State Secretariats accordingly.
  3. Published on the Official Federal Gazette by the Bodies as a project and, by the Economics Ministry as definitive Standard in the same Gazette, declaring their validity.
  4. They are voluntary. In case of requiring a voluntary certification, imported products or manufactured in the country can be comply with them.
  5. They are monitored by accredited Certification Bodies.

A Mexican Standard may become a mandatory compliance document, in case it is referred into a mandatory legal instrument, for example, a Mexican Official Standard.

NYCE works on the Mexican Standards harmonization to make them adaptable to the Country needs, transforming them into Mexican Standards.
